De Tjolomadoe

De Tjolomadoe museum was a sugar factory during the golden days; built in Karanganyar area in Surakarta in the year of 1861 by Mangkunegaran IV.

Mangkunegaran IV is the 4th ruler of Mangkunegaran; a small Javanese princely state located within the region of Surakarta, middle Java, Indonesia. Mangkunegaran was established in 1757 by Raden Mas Said, when he submitted his army to Pakubuwono III and swore allegiance to the rulers of Surakarta and the Dutch East Indies Company. He was given an appanage (grant of an estate, title, office, or other thing of value) of 4000 households. Raden Mas Said became the ruler of a part of Eastern Mataram*. The palace is located in the center of the city of Surakarta and know as Pura Mangkunegaran.

*The Sultanate of Mataram was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on Java before the island was colonised by the Dutch. It was the dominant political force radiating from the interior Central Java from the late 16th century until the beginning of the 18th century. Mataram reached its peak of power during the reign of Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusuma (reigned 1613–1645), and began to decline after his death in 1645. By the mid-18th century, Mataram lost both power and territory to the Dutch East India Company (Dutch: Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie; VOC). It had become a vassal state of the company by 1749.

Back to the Colomadu sugar factory! It has been 20 years since the factory stopped operating and producing sugar. The factory was completely ruined due to abandonment. The blue print for the factory was nowhere to be found, even at the documentary state of The Netherlands in Leiden can only provide 2-3 images that existed.

Tracing back the factory itself, it has going through an expansion in 1928 with extended Sugar Cane field and changing of architecture.

In 2017, PT PP (Persero) Tbk, PT PP Properti Tbk, PT Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan, Borobudur,  Ratu Boko (Persero), and PT Jasa Marga Properti had made a joint venture under the name PT Sinergi Colomadu. The sugar factory has been revitalized and changed into a cultural preservation area. A sugar factory that was of 1.3 sqm hectare on a land of 6.4 sqm hectare was revitalized and kept its values. It is now a museum, a very nice one, very informative and personally has wowed me!

Why was such a great sugar factory closed, you asked? PG Colomadu was closed in 1998 because there was no more sugar cane field that can supply such grand machinery.

And now, it was left to us to reminisce the old era and the golden year.
